Description
Close-up photograph of a maiko from the Gion Kobu district performing Rokudan Kuzushi, a traditional dance performed with a tengui or silk scarf in Gion in Kyoto, Japan. The maiko photographed is wearing a vibrant green hikizuri kimono with long dangling sleeves showing an origami crane motif and a white or cream darai obi depicting beautiful cherry blossoms in pink, yellow, orange and gold. In a close-up picture like this you can truly appreciate the details that go into a traditional outfit such as this, with many accents of red silk bringing contrast and harmony between the different colours and textures. You can also see here the decorative obijime or cord that goes around the obi and also the obi dome or pocchiri at the front, a decorative ornament made with precious stones, these are often decades old or even older. Here her red and white silk scarf is tucked into her obi as it is used during the performance.
Maiko(舞妓), are apprentice geisha or geiko in Kyoto, Japan. There are 5 geisha districts in Kyoto, the most famous of which is Gion. Maiko are distinguishable from geiko by several key areas, they style their own hair and wear floral hair ornaments known as hana kanzashi. They also wear colourful hikizuri kimono with long sleeves and a trailing hem and a very long darai, or dangling obi belt which displays the crest of their okiya.
