Description
Close-up portrait of a chestnut, dark brown and black donkey’s face.
I photographed this beautiful and very friendly furry donkey on a winter day near the town of Burley in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire in the south of England UK. I crouched down low on the ground to take this photograph and luckily this donkey approached me and I was able to capture this photo which I believe captures the nature of donkeys quite well.
The donkey or ass (Equus africanus asinus) is a working animal and a member of the horse family. There is around 200 donkeys living wild in the New Forest, and due to their hardy nature and thick winter fur coat they are able to survive there all year round.
The New Forest is a large tract of crown land and today one of the largest countryside areas areas of pasture land, heathland and forest in Southern England, it covers southwest Hampshire and southeast Wiltshire. There are common rights in various areas where ponies, horses, cows and even some pigs and donkeys roam free to graze and maintain the heathland.
