Normally one of the busiest areas in Kyoto, visiting early in the morning awarded me with a quiet and peaceful walk through the grounds of Yasaka shrine (Yasaka-jinja, a Shinto shrine located in the popular Gion district.
Japanese traditional lanterns such as the ones photographed here are known as ‘tōrō’, and can be made of metal, wood or stone. Originally they would only be used in Buddhist temples, to light up pathways, but now they can also find at Shinto shrines and in homes. The Tōrō photographed were hanging from the roof of one of the buildings in the shrine complex, and are known specifically as tsuri-dōrō, meaning hanging lamp.
