Description
Photograph of a herd of female sika deer and calf in a field.
I photographed these deer at a field near Arne RSPB reserve in Wareham, Dorset, in the south of England, UK. I visit the area regularly and this small herd seems to always be in this same field, it's wonderful to be able to see them grow a family!
Sika deer (Cervus nippon), spotted deer or Japanese deer is a deer species native to East Asia which has been introduced to many parts of the world, including England. Sika deer do not loose their spots upon reaching maturity, but in some subspecies these spots are rarely visible, as shown in my photo. Their coat ranged from a reddish brown to black and occasionally individuals can be found with white fur. Stags have antlers, usually forked. Deer are animals and hoofed mammals of the family Cervidae. Male deer of almost all species grow and shed new antlers each year.
