Description
Photograph of a large mature European beech tree showing the first hints of autumn as the leaves start to turn and change colour, I took this photo from the base of the trunk looking up to capture its immense size. Photographed near the village of Burley. in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire in the south of England UK.
The New Forest is a large tract of crown land and today one of the largest countryside areas areas of pasture land, heathland and forest in Southern England, it covers southwest Hampshire and southeast Wiltshire. There are common rights in various areas where ponies, horses, cows and even some pigs and donkeys roam free to graze and maintain the heathland. The New Forest boasts many varieties of tree, including beech which is a native species. 1000 years ago William The Conqueror visited the New Forest, and today the ancient landscape remains relatively unchanged, the area is classed as ancient woodland, many of the trees have stood throughout the ages.
The European beech (fagus sylvatica), or common beech is a large deciduous tree with a lifetime of 150-200 years.
