Description
Ink illustration and watercolour painting of a female rhinoceros hornbill.
Drawn using one of my own photographs as reference, I used sakura pigma micron marker pens for the outline and detail work and added colour with watercolour paint.
Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) are a large species of forest hornbill, a bird found in Asia in Borneo, Sumatra, Java, the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, and southern Thailand, in tropical rainforests. They have black feathers with a white tail which has a black band. To me they sometimes give off an iridescent hue so in my painting I added some blue to the plumage. Rhino hornbill have a very large vibrant bill or beak which blends from red, to orange and yellow. Females have a red rim around the eye.
